5 Reasons Why Canva is My Go To for Beautiful Images

Mar 15, 2020

Are you a DIYer or a Delegator? I often speak about the importance of delegating and how we should focus on our core strengths, and I stand by this approach 100%. However, sometimes it is really worth investing a bit of time in learning something new that can generate big results and huge savings in time and money.

Two examples come to mind straight away. One is your website and the other is graphic design for social media. Now you may think that I’m crazy to suggest you DIY a website or your social images, and there are definitely specialists that study for years to produce stunning and unique results in both of these areas, but I’m not talking about perfection.

I know that web design is an enormous topic that often fills people with dread and lots of questions so let’s park that for now. Although I will toot my own horn (toot, toot!) and say that I have single handily been working on the complete redesign of my website over the last 4 months and will be launching it in a couple of weeks so watch this space…

What I would like to talk about is graphic design and how using a few free and fantastic websites will allow you to produce some memorable and beautiful images for your social media, website and other marketing materials. Would a professional graphic designer do a better job? Probably. But can you save yourselves heaps of money by doing it yourself and doing it well? Definitely. Not to mention the satisfaction that comes from creating something beautiful – who doesn’t enjoy that?

Before we dive into my very favourite websites, I just want to state that I have no affiliation with any of these sights, although I would be delighted if I did! They just really work for me, and I think they can work for you too!

Canva is a graphic design platform that allows users to create social media graphics, presentations, posters and other visual content for the web or for print. Since being founded in 2012, it has attracted nearly 1 million users.

5 things that make Canva Great:

1. You Don’t Need Design Skills

There are so many templates available for you to personalise and make your own that you really don’t ever have to worry about coming up with something from scratch. All you have to do is pick the design you want to create and then swap out images, text and font as you like. There are so many templates to choose from, and they are conveniently grouped by type from YouTube Thumbnails and Instagram Posts to A4 Flyers and Facebook Banners, so you can immediately go to the ones you need.

2. It’s Easy to Use

Even if you don’t work off a predesigned layout, Canva is still easy to use. You can either upload your own image or use one of the many free images they offer as a background or just a section of any design. The search function for images, shapes and clip art is also very effective and user friendly. You should see some of the photo  images I get when I search for goal, idea or friendship. In fact, you have! You can also easily change colours, fonts, styles and shapes. I actually find this super fun and therapeutic!

3. The Possibilities are Endless

Almost everything you see from me on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn comes from Canva. They also have designs for Pinterest, Youtube, Tumblr and more social media outlets. It doesn’t stop there. Canva also has designs for a Kindle Cover, Blog Graphic, Infographic and more. I created all my eBooks and Free Resource Guides on Canva as well! Another nifty feature is an option for custom images too.

4. Teamwork

You can share designs and images with team members via email or link and determine the amount of access they have to make edits. Canva also allows you to share images directly from their website to Facebook and Twitter.

5. It’s (Mostly) Free

One of Canva’s best features is its impressive range of free stock photography (accessible via the ‘Photos’ button in the left-hand menu). However, if you’d rather work with one of you own pictures, just click ‘Uploads’ and either search for a picture on your computer or drag and drop it from your desktop. All uploaded images will be saved to your account so you can use them again later. There’s also an extensive range of ‘elements’ on offer for free including shapes and clipart.

I started with the free account on Canva that offers a generous selection of photos, tools and templates. If you want additional things, there are “in-app purchases” that can be made for pictures, symbols, etc. The abilities you have with the free version don’t make it necessary to upgrade the account, but I did because I wanted more functionality. For example, the paid for versions offer me resizing, animations and more templates and images. As an avid user of this site, I feel like it’s worth my while!

What if you can’t find the photo or image that you want?

There are so many websites that offer free, royalty free photos to choose from, but Pexels is my favourite.

What is Pexels? It is a site that helps designers, bloggers and everyone who is looking for visuals to find great photos and videos that can be used everywhere for free. This is a really important point because you only have the right to use and download royalty free images from the web.

Are the photos and videos on Pexels really free?

Yes, all photos and videos uploaded on Pexels are included under the Pexels license. This means that you can use them for free for personal and commercial purposes including your commercial website, blog, product or anywhere else.

What do I do with the images once I download them?

I would put them in an allocated folder on your desktop or on google drive and then when you are on Canva and can’t find the right image, just use one of these! Just download the image you want from Pexels onto your computer and then upload the image into Canva.

What are sponsored photos?

At the bottom of the screen you will always see sponsored photos which are photos from partners for sale. If you want one of these photos, you’ll get redirected to their website when you click on one, where you will be able to buy the photo.

There are so many free choices on Pexels and Canva though, that you will rarely, if ever need to buy a photo.

So there you have it, my best reasons to make your own beautiful images with the one two punch of Canva and and Pexels. With these two sites you will soon be creating gorgeous images like a ninja! If you are interested in a tutorial or want to hear more about this, then let me know and I will put one together for a future blog.
