7 Simple Steps to Reboot 2020

Jul 06, 2020

I would normally start a post on this topic with something like – are you killing the goals you set in January? Or maybe, time to get back on track! But I have to say, the first thing that comes to my mind is that 2020 has been tough! Speaking for myself, I had all these plans at the beginning of the year about workshops I was going to create, stages where I was going to speak and my signature digital course that I was going to launch in October. It all started well and then Covid hit. Like everyone else, my world was turned upside down and my big plans went on hold.

We now find ourselves 4 months into lockdown with half the year gone at a big potential turning point. The first thing I would like to say to you, my friend, is don’t panic, stay calm and breathe. You have before you an excellent opportunity to reassess the goals you set in January and see if they are still aligned to the person you are today in the new landscape we find ourselves in.

You also have an opportunity to generate amazing results in your business by getting laser focused on what you really want to do and how you will get it done. To make this process simpler for you, I have put together 7 steps to help you create a magical 6 month plan to finish 2020 with a bang!

Shall we dive in?

Step 1

Look at the Big Picture

The first thing to do is to take a step back and look at the big picture. Specifically, ask yourself the big questions about how things have changed for you and your business in the last 6 months. Do you want to pursue the same goals you set in January? It’s ok if the answer is no. Look deep inside and see if your goals are still aligned with who you are. What no longer fits? (If you would like some help clarifying your core values, check out my FREE worksheet here, 5 Steps to Make You Happy)

For example, at the beginning of the year I was planning on creating a signature digital course covering all of PowerSystem, my 5-step process helping entrepreneurial women find the time and financial freedom they crave. I usually teach this process in a 6 month 1 to 1 coaching programme. During lockdown, I asked myself big picture questions and came to understand that right now, I could best serve my audience by zoning in and concentrating on just the second pillar of PowerSystem which focuses on productivity. Having made that focus shift, the next steps came much more easily. The key for Step 1 is to identify any shifts you may now have in your own thinking and adapt your plan accordingly.

Step 2

Analyse Successes

One of the best ways to clarify where you want to go is to look back and see what has gone well for you so far. Look at the successes you have already achieved this year and ask yourself these questions:

  • What’s gone really well in the pursuit of your goals?
  • What was the nature of your success: did it make you feel good? Did you make a new connection? did you make lots of money?
  • What activities or projects are you enjoying? Do you want to do more of them?
  • How do those successes tie into your big vision? Can you dive deeper into these successes and extrapolate?

For example, if you ran a really successful workshop earlier in the year and it went really well, could running workshops become a main goal for the next 6 months? If you had a successful workshop, could you create 3 more?

Then take a look at the flip side. If you haven’t achieved what you wanted to, why not? If you want to still pursue a goal that hasn’t worked, decide what changes you’re going to make either to the goal itself, or to your approach to it. It might be that one goal is going really well but it’s taking your attention away from something else, so how can you shift your activity and mindset for better balance?

Step 3

Set a Stretching Goal

Now that you have established what your goals are, it’s time to quantify them. Firstly, you need to set a goal that is not so easy that you achieve it too easily, or so out of your depth that you can never achieve it. The first way makes you feel flat and like you haven’t really moved things forward, the second makes you feel frustrated and dejected. The balance between the two is where the stretching goal lies. One way to find that golden point is to use the SMART Goal methodology.

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, and Time-Based.  For example, instead of saying, “My goal is to find a new job,” using the SMART system, you can change it to “I plan to change careers and become a freelance writer by December 31st.” Make sense?

There is so much to be said on the subject of setting goals and I am so excited to cover this topic in a workshop I will be offering in August, so watch this space! In the meantime, remember to push yourself out of your comfort zone while staying in the realm of reality!

Step 4

Setting Targets

Now that your goals are realigned, and you have clarified your big vision – what do you do next? I always start with a monthly timeline spreadsheet that has actionable targets set for each goal that I want to work on.  This system gives everything a place and time for me to progress and track and helps me to be realistic about what can realistically get done.

You can create a timeline in whatever way makes sense for you, mine has the months in a row with my goals down the column. Then under each goal I have a line for target and underneath it, a line for actual.

I’ll illustrate the process with an example of growing your email list. Let’s say your goal was to grow your email list from 1000 to 2000 subscribers. Using this system, you would type in your total number of subscribers at the end of June (1000) and enter 2000 as your end goal. You then fill in the monthly target with how many people you want to get each month (1100 in July, 1200 in August, 1400 in September, etc.). You then look at what activities will drive traffic to your list to hit your targets. It could like something like this:

Step 5

Break it Down into Weekly Tasks

Now that you have your overall big picture objectives and monthly targets, it’s time to break it down into weekly actions. For each goal, follow these three steps:

  1. Begin by writing out each task required to reach your next milestone, brain dumps are most welcome here!
  2. Next, determine the timeline of these actions – what needs to happen first, what needs to happen second, etc.?
  3. Lastly schedule the most important activities into your calendar each week with a finite amount of time to complete your tasks. That means give yourself a specific amount of time (no more than two hours at a time) to work on a specific task.

Step 6

Track Your Progress

Tracking your progress not only helps you adjust your plan as needed, but it allows you to find motivation by seeing how far you’ve come.

One approach is to create a visual. My favourite system is to use a whiteboard and sticky notes to track monthly goals as they move from “to do” to “in progress” to “completed.” For a full break down of this process, check out my blog, Monthly Planning 101. Here is an example of what my board looks like:

At the end of each month, take a good look to see if there are any holes in your goals, or places where they lack specificity. Evaluate and adjust your goals on a monthly basis to set yourself up for success.

Step 7

Accountability

Accountability is the magic sauce to the recipe of success and the area where most of my students struggle the most. It’s hard to do things alone. Making endless decisions without a sounding board can also leave you running around in circles. When you are responsible to yourself and the success or failure of your business lies squarely on your shoulders, it can be difficult to stay on track, retain focus and finish projects or even have the bandwidth to just sit down and get started! So what do you do?

My best tip is to find an accountability buddy. If you belong to any supportive groups on Facebook or in real life, that is a great place to start looking for somebody at a similar stage in their business who has similar goals. You can then arrange for weekly catch ups to discuss wins, challenges and goals. I have an accountability buddy and find it incredibly helpful to move things forward.

If you don’t know where to look, please come to my Facebook Group, Female Entrepreneurs Craving Time and Financial Freedom where I will be happy to try to match you up with an accountability buddy. We also have a weekly thread on Sundays where we share our three big goals for the next week and check in on each other to provide accountability. I want you to know that you are not alone, and I welcome you to join us! Just click here and I hope to see you there soon.

Another option is to find a coach to help you with specific issues from productivity, to digital marketing to mindset. My clients have often told me that one of the greatest benefits of working together is the accountability I provide along with that little gentle push to take action. If you think you might benefit from this kind of accountability, then I would like to invite you to book a complimentary Kickstart Your POWER Session.
