7 Simple Steps to Reboot 2021

Can you believe we’re halfway through 2021? I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but we are only now starting to see anything close to normal here in the UK. Is it a huge relief? Yes. Did I expect this to go on so long? No.

 

I bring this up because the world has moved on in the last 6 months and I’m sure that you and your business have as well. Maybe there have been new opportunities. Perhaps your goals have changed. Potentially, what seemed like a good idea in January no longer looks like the best way forward. Or maybe, you crushed it on a launch or a workshop and you want to do more of the same. All good reasons to look at how the last 6 months have gone, check in with what went right and what didn’t, and course correct if necessary.

 

As a Business Coach who helps online business owners simplify their marketing strategy to get engaged clients that buy, I find this exercise critical in my own planning. It’s so important to be able to adapt to the needs of your clients and the changes in your marketplace. That’s why I go through this check in process every 6 months and would like to share that system with you.

 

Now is an excellent opportunity to reassess the goals you set in January and see if they are still aligned to the person you are today. You also have an opportunity to generate amazing results in your business by getting laser focused on what you really want to do and how you’ll get it done. To make this process simpler for you, I have put together 7 steps to help you create a magical 6-month plan to finish 2021 with a bang!

 

Shall we dive in?

 

Step 1

Look at the Big Picture

 

To begin, let’s take a step back and look at the big picture. Ask yourself the big questions about how things have changed for you and your business in the last 6 months. Do you want to pursue the same goals you set in January? It’s ok if the answer is no. Look deep inside and see if your goals are still aligned with who you are. What no longer fits? The key for Step 1 is to identify any shifts you may now have in your own thinking and adapt your plan accordingly.

 

Step 2

Analyse Successes

 

One of the best ways to clarify where you want to go is to look back and see what’s gone well for you so far. Look at the successes you already achieved this year and ask yourself these questions:

 

  • What’s gone well?
  • What kind of success was it? Did it make you feel good? Did you make a new connection? Did you make lots of money?
  • What activities or projects are you enjoying? Do you want to do more of them?
  • What activities haven’t met expectations? Do you want to make tweaks and keep trying, or do you want to try a different direction?

 

For example, if you ran a successful workshop earlier in the year and it went well, could running workshops become a main goal for the next 6 months? If you had a successful workshop, could you create 3 more? Or even better, run the same one 3 more times?

 

Then look at the flip side. If you haven’t achieved what you wanted to, why not? If you still want to pursue a goal that hasn’t worked, decide what changes you’re going to make either to the goal itself, or to your approach to it. The key to step 2 is to identify what went well and why so that you could do more of it.  Or, what didn’t go well and how you will course correct.

 

Step 3

Set a Stretching Goal

 

Now that you know what you want to work on, it’s time to get specific. Firstly, you need to set your goals in the stretching zone. That means that they shouldn’t be too easily achieved, or so out of your reach that they’re unattainable. Too easy makes you feel flat and like you haven’t really moved things forward, and too hard makes you feel frustrated and dejected. The balance between the two is where the stretching goal lies. This concept is the second S in my “Goals are Your #1 ASSET” methodology.

 

For example, instead of saying, “My goal is to make more money,” using the ASSET system, you can change it to “I plan to increase revenue this year by 20%, earning $100,000 by December 31st.” Make sense? For Step 3, remember to push yourself out of your comfort zone while staying in the realm of reality!

 

Step 4

Setting Targets

 

Now it’s time to get practical and map out your stretching goals into targets with timely deadlines. Why? Because knowing when something needs to be done and to what level gives you the motivation to get to work! In my Path to Productivity system, I use a monthly timeline spreadsheet with actionable targets set for each goal that I want to work on.  

 

You can create a timeline in whatever way makes sense for you. Mine has the months in a row with my goals down the column. Under each goal I have a line for target in black and underneath it, a line for actual in red.

 

I’ll illustrate the process with an example of growing your email list. Let’s say your goal was to grow your email list from 100 to 500 subscribers. Using this system, you would type in your total number of subscribers at the end of June (100) and enter 500 as your end goal in December. You then fill in the monthly targets with how many people you want at the end of each month (150 in July, 200 in August, 250 in September, etc.). You then look at what activities will drive traffic to your list to hit your targets like a 5-day challenge or Facebook ads. It could look something like this:

 

For Step 4, break your end goal into monthly targets and come up with 2-4 strategies to hit them.

 

Step 5

Break it Down into Weekly Tasks

 

Now that you have your overall big picture objectives and monthly targets, it’s time to break them down into weekly actions. For each goal, follow these three steps:

 

  1. Begin by writing out each task required to reach your next milestone, brain dumps are most welcome here!
  2. Next, determine the timeline of these actions – what needs to happen first, what needs to happen second, etc.?
  3. Lastly schedule the most important activities into your calendar each week with a finite amount of time to complete your tasks. That means give yourself a specific amount of time (no more than two hours at a time) to work on a specific task.

 

In step 5, you bring your tasks to life by putting them into your calendar and allocating a time limit to complete them.

 

Step 6

Track Your Progress

 

Tracking your progress not only helps you adjust your plan as needed, but it allows you to find motivation by seeing how far you’ve come.

 

One approach is to create a visual. My favourite system is to use a whiteboard and sticky notes to track monthly goals as they move from “to do” to “in progress” to “completed.” For a full break down of this process, check out my blog, Monthly Planning 101. Here is an example of what my board looks like:

 

 At the end of each month, take a good look to see if there are any areas where the tasks aren’t getting completed. Also note what is hanging around in progress – what’s stopping you from finishing?

In step 6, you’ll find that tracking how you action your goals monthly is a simple method to ensure you achieve your targeted results.

 

Step 7

Accountability

 

Accountability is the magic sauce to the recipe of success and the area where most of my clients struggle the most. It’s hard to do things alone. Making endless decisions without a sounding board can also leave you running around in circles. When you are responsible to yourself and the success or failure of your business lies squarely on your shoulders, it can be difficult to stay on track, retain focus and finish projects or even have the bandwidth to just sit down and get started! So what do you do?

 

My best tip is to find an accountability buddy. If you belong to any supportive groups on Facebook or in real life, that is a great place to start looking for somebody at a similar stage in their business who has similar goals. You can then arrange for weekly catch ups to discuss wins, challenges and goals. I have an accountability buddy and find it incredibly helpful to move things forward.
