Making Gratitude Part of Daily Life

According to Cicero, "Gratitude is not only the greatest of the virtues but the parent of all others."

While we all know that gratitude is beneficial, it is usually at this time of year, with Thanksgiving upon us, that we tend to take a moment to reflect on gratitude and what it might look like for us.

The benefits of practicing gratitude are nearly endless. People who regularly practice gratitude by taking time to notice and reflect upon the things they're thankful for experience more positive emotions, feel more alive, sleep better, express more compassion and kindness, and even have stronger immune systems. And gratitude doesn't need to be reserved only for momentous occasions: Sure, you might express gratitude after receiving a promotion at work, but you can also be thankful for something as simple as a good hair day.

It's also good to remember that gratitude is a year round thing.  It's true that Thanksgiving really brings it into focus, but I would like to give you some suggestions to include gratitude into your life all year:

  • Every act of gratitude counts, and it can be as small as saying thank you or telling someone important how much they mean to you.
  • Lead by example and introduce the concept of gratitude to young people around you. At your next meal where kids are present, go around the table and say something that each person is thankful for.
  • While mornings can be a hectic time before heading out of the house, make it a point to tell your partner how much you care about them.
  • Acknowledge a colleague for their professional contributions with a genuine heartfelt thank you.
  • And of course, righting a gratitude list every night before bed.
