The Secret Sauce That Makes Work Fun!

Did you know that the fear of public speaking is the most common phobia ahead of death, spiders, or heights? In fact, The National Institute of Mental Health reports that public speaking anxiety, or glossophobia, affects about 73% of the population. That's huge, right?

 

I have to admit to always getting a bit nervous before I get on stage to speak, but once I'm there - I love it! There's a real boost of adrenaline that comes from connecting to people with a message you believe in and making eye contact with people who are nodding and showing their identification with what you are saying. Have you ever felt this?

 

Unfortunately, one of the side effects of the covid pandemic has been the closure of all summits, events and forums where one would normally speak. Instead, a lot of these amazing events have shifted to an online platform where speakers can still deliver the content, but in a different way. I have to admit that it's not the same, but it is still so gratifying to be able to share a message and bring inspiration to female entrepreneurs seeking time and financial freedom despite current restrictions. 

 

It was for this reason I was honoured to be part of the virtual Global Woman Summit a couple of weeks ago where I spoke on the topic of The Secret Sauce That Makes Work Fun.

 

So often, we sit down to work and feel unmotivated, overwhelmed and uninspired. I know I've been there and so have many of my students. The first step to breaking through those feelings is to align your passion with your business objectives. I discuss this topic in my talk which I would now like to share with you.

Let me ask you a question... 

 

Would you like to get more done in less time?   Would you also like to know exactly what to work on to maximise time, revenue and results?  You’re not alone!

 

If you're like a lot of people I've helped before, you might be trying to take your business to the next level, but don't know where to start. Maybe you have so much to do that you can’t figure out what to work on first, or perhaps you find it difficult to focus because you get easily distracted by the next shiny thing or even social media. Possibly when it comes down to it, you may have your tasks all set to do, but you just don’t feel like doing them.

 

So what happens? At the end of the day, you might feel depressed and upset that you are not getting things done or moving forward in your business. These negative thoughts can lead you to think that none of it is worth doing anyway and even leave you feeling irritable, snappy and exhausted.  Can you relate to this?

 

So where do you want to be?  Can you picture what would it be like to wake up in the morning feeling excited to start your day because you are so passionate about what you do.  How would it feel to be motivated and committed to do your work because you knew it was completely aligned with your beliefs and your passion? Would you feel able to get your work done if you knew exactly what you needed to do to reach your goals?

 

Imagine having systems in place that give you three hours a week extra to not only work on your business instead of spending all your time putting out fires, but to also have time to focus on your own self-care. 

 

Let me ask you a question.... How are you going to get there?   It’s all about discovering the secret sauce that makes work fun and you and I are going to discover what that is today. Are you with me?

 

So here is a truth I learned: By investing the time up front to discover what you are passionate about, you will give yourself the enthusiasm, drive and motivation to create a life that is happy, satisfied and fulfilled.

 

Do you know what I’m talking about? I’m taking about understanding your why. Have you heard people say that before? Identifying your why means understanding your passion and your core beliefs. It means understanding what gets you excited and understanding what change you want to make in the world.

 

I know that you want to make change because otherwise you wouldn’t be here. You are strong and ambitious women that are on an entrepreneurial journey to create time and financial freedom. The freedom to do what you want when you want whether that means spending time with your family, taking a holiday or taking time for exercise and artistic pursuits. When you are in charge, your choices are endless, but it all begins with your why.

 

Finding your why isn’t always easy though. My clients often struggle with this question and that is why I created a fantastic resource that I will share now called 5 Steps to Make You Happy. This free worksheet will help you to identify what your core values are and how to incorporate them into daily life. This is the beginning of discovering your why.  But knowing your why isn’t enough, that’s just the beginning. You then have to take action. Self-knowledge is amazing, but if we don’t take action on what we learn, it doesn’t mean anything.

 

This is really important, so I’ll say it again, finding out your why is critical to living a happy life, but just knowing about it means nothing if you don’t do something with it. You need to take action and you need to do it now.

 

Why now you may be wondering? The reason you need to take action now is because we have all been in lockdown for four months. This has been a challenging and difficult period for us all.  Listen, I have 4 teenage kids at home and believe me, as much as I love them, I have found it very difficult to deal with their schooling, trying to keep their brains from rotting from constant electronics, buying all their food, cooking 1000 meals – seriously, I must have cooked 365 dinners by now, all while trying to run and grow my own business. Are you with me on this? 

 

Now that things are finally opening up and getting back to normal means that this is the time for you to shake off those lockdown blues and stand strong as the fierce and powerful woman you are. Now is the time to say goodbye to uncertainty and to get crystal clear on what steps you need to take to see big results.

 

I want to see you succeed and I want to help you get those big results, but why should you listen to me?  It begins with a story now about how I found the secret sauce to make work fun.

 

Growing up in New York, the importance of having a career had been drilled into from an early age.  The culture I grew up in identified success as making lots of money by establishing a successful career. I had no idea what I wanted to do or what to path to follow, but I was very good at numbers.  In New York, that meant going into finance, which I did, but it was just a job that I didn’t particularly enjoy. Going there every day was a chore, but at least it was the beginning of a career.

 

After 3 years I went on to study at Columbia Business School and received my MBA. That is where I discovered marketing which involved products, strategy and creativity so I switched careers and got excited that I had now found something to do that really lit me up.  After business school, I moved to the UK and got a job with Sainsbury’s as a marketing manager. At first it was fun and I was progressing rapidly through the hierarchy and my new career was up and running. But after the birth of my first daughter, everything changed. When I went back to work, I found that I was firmly off the fast track even though I was still managing a team 4 days a week.  Also, the reality of trying to balance being a mother and working for a corporate was much harder than I ever could have imagined. Being a perfectionist, I felt less than on all fronts as I wasn’t able to give 100% to my job or my child.

 

In order to move forward, I had to stop and really take the time to understand my priorities. I was in a fortunate position that I was able to make the decision to stop working and raise my family full time. I went on to have a further three children and raising them all has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.  But here’s the thing, I was raised to believe that having a career was how I should define myself. That was my measure of success, regardless of whether or not I was enjoying what I was doing and here I was with four kids, no career and no prospects of finding success in the future. I couldn’t help but feel like a failure even though raising my children was a joy and most definitely the best decision I ever made.

 

Fast forward 8 years to when my husband and I decided to take the kids and move to Australia for 2 years! Crazy right?  At this point I was feeling very low and had really lost the sense of my own identity. I was a mother, a wife, a cook, a driver, a pa, but none of these things were me. The idea of a career and something that was my own seemed very far away and I was lost and unfocused, overweight and lacking in self esteem.

 

All this changed when we moved to Australia where I began a journey of transformation that changed my mind, body and spirit. At the end, not only was I slimmer and stronger, but I had more confidence and energy than I ever had before. Most importantly, I learned to be present in my own life and to really enjoy it! I also discovered that in addition to personal strength, this transformation also gave me the confidence and motivation to finally pursue my professional ambitions as well. 

 

I started looking for what was next. This search was the big question. This was at the heart of the lack of focus I had been suffering from. I knew that the corporate work I had done before was no longer for me. Also, having undergone my wonderful transformation, I knew that I wanted to help others feel great and move forwards in their lives the way I had, but how?

 

With this mindset, I started noticing that everywhere I went I saw other women who were feeling the way I used to; busy, unhappy, not looking after themselves, exhausted and snappy. I remember thinking “I know how you feel” and found myself in so many conversations helping them to see that it didn’t have to be that way.  Through these discussions and because it just felt so right helping others, I had an epiphany: I understood that I wanted to help other women who were struggling with similar issues to have the same results I was having.

 

Here was my missing piece. Here was my why. Here was the purpose that I had been looking for but couldn’t find until I first fixed myself and set the foundation for the POWER to move forward. But finding my why, while a huge relief, was only the beginning, not the end. I then had to understand what to do with it to make a life that was happy, satisfied and fulfilled.

 

Upon returning to the UK, I took my first action step and retrained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where I qualified as a Health Coach. I then opened my practice and began working with women to make them feel good about themselves again. It was at this point that I finally started feeling fulfilled.  I thought that this was all great and now the clients and success would just come rolling in, but that’s when the doubts started coming in. My friends didn’t really understand what I was doing and I had a hard time explaining it to them.

 

My husband thought it was all a hobby and not a business and it was difficult for me to justify any monetary investment I was making. I then made all the classical mistakes from chasing every new shiny object that promised success from email list growth and Facebook ads to Instagram stories and LinkedIn connections. I tried to put my finger in every pie without a clear set of goals, targets or any direction at all. I didn’t even have any idea of what kind of numbers I was targeting! Not the revenue I wanted to generate or what my costs, small as they were, actually equaled!

 

Needless to say, my business didn’t grow. I felt depressed, dejected and full of self-limiting beliefs. But there was no way that I was going back to where I was before I went to Australia.  Why? Because I had a drive, a mission that fuelled my motivation. To help other women find that transformation to live a satisfied and fulfilled life. Because I had a purpose, I knew I could do better. Besides, mistakes are part of the learning process.  So what did I do? Honestly, I did the same thing you might, or anyone would. 

 

I had to DIG DEEP, open myself to LEARNING and to seeking NEW MENTORS.  Most of all, I had to see a different kind of future for myself and my family, and I had to get to work.

  

So I got a business coach, joined a mastermind group and started going to networking events. Piece by piece the puzzle came together. First, I rebranded and created a website that spoke with my voice. Then I started building my presence on social media, focusing on just Facebook and Instagram to start, and I started booking calls to find clients.

 

I opened my practice and began working with women to make them feel good about themselves again. After expanding to the online world, I then began attending networking events leading on to speaking opportunities. Boy do I love to speak to a roomful of interested and interesting women!

 

With these small wins, my business started to grow and I can tell you that today, I have been a finalist for two business awards, have been featured in several magazines including the cover of Global Woman, I have spoken all over London from the 400+ audience at the Rich Women Masterclass hosted by Success Resources and The Global Women Summit last year, to the Business Woman Today Forum. I have been fortunate enough to share the stage with people like Kim Kiyosaki, John Lee, Andy Harrington, Veronica Tan and our own truly amazing Mirela Sula.

 

I have co-authored The Mind of the Female Entrepreneur which became an Amazon best seller and am about to be featured in new book called Unleash Today coming out later this year.  I have enjoyed some really big wins and it all started with finding my why.

 

Have you figured out the secret sauce that makes work fun yet? That’s right, it’s discovering your why and bringing your passion, enthusiasm and excitement into your business.

  

I feel very passionately about our own ability to make big changes in our lives by starting with small steps in the fundamentals like mindset, goal setting and self-care. While working with my 1 to 1 clients, I discovered that a lot of women were facing similar challenges and an idea started forming in my mind of a system that could help them get their POWER back. As it turned out, my clients were all women in business. As a businesswoman myself, I realised that my clients couldn’t move forward in their careers until they took care of themselves on a personal level first.  I am shortly going to talk to you about productivity, my favourite subject, but before I do, I want to share this with you:

 

Before getting organised in your career, you need to first get organised in your head and in your life, identify your priorities and establish a support network, both personally and professionally, to then enable you to move towards your professional aspirations.

  

Armed with this truth, the insights I gained from my personal transformation, and my early work with business women in similar situations, I created PowerSystem, a 5-step process specifically designed to help entrepreneurial women set the foundations for time and financial freedom.

 

I want to share with you the 5 critical steps to getting your POWER back. The word POWER is going to help you remember each of them

 

You see, P stands for priority: You need to make yourself a priority in your own life. As women we are used to putting ourselves at the bottom of the list. We first think of our children, our partners, our work colleagues, our friends, our pets - anyone but us! If you look after yourself first, you will have the confidence, strength and energy to be there for the people you care about. It’s like putting your oxygen mask on first in an airplane. 

 

Next is O for Order. This step is about creating the time freedom that you became an entrepreneur to achieve in the first place. That means having more time in the day to work ON your business, or, to take care of yourself with exercise, meditation or creative pursuits like writing and painting. If you are organised and in control of your schedule, you can rule your world instead of letting it rule you. You can achieve your big goals with time to spare.

 

Now for W, connecting to the World around you. Communication is so important. If you work on expressing yourself, building your support network and learning to set boundaries, you will be able to share what’s really important to you with the world around you, and feel supported in return.

 

Then comes E which stands for Energy. By focusing on eating healthy foods, fitting movement into your weekly routine and getting enough sleep you will be able to unlock the energy you need to take on the world.

 

Finally R is for Roadmap. You’ve fuelled your body and life for success but where are you going? You have to figure out what’s next. What’s your why? What’s YOUR secret sauce?

 

By taking these action steps towards getting your POWER back, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your dreams. 

 

I want to share this message with you because I want you to know that getting your POWER back is totally achievable. By investing the time up front to discover what you are passionate about and then taking action on it, you will give yourself the enthusiasm, drive and motivation to create a life that is happy, satisfied and fulfilled.

 

Let’s take a moment now to drill down into how you can take this passion and use it in your business today.  Because a secret sauce sitting in a bottle doesn’t do anything on its own, right? You need to pour it on to your business to make a dish you want to go back to over and over again!

 

Today, we’re going to look at the O in PowerSystem and focus on productivity because after you find your why, this is where the magic happens!  The first thing you need to do is take a step back and look at the big picture. Specifically, ask yourself the big questions about how things have changed for you and your business in the last 6 months. None of us are the same person we were in January because too much has happened globally since then!

 

Do you want to pursue the same goals you set in January? It’s ok if the answer is no. Look deep inside and see if your goals are still aligned with who you are. With your why.  If there are things that no longer fit, it’s time to let them go. You have an opportunity right now to generate amazing results in your business by getting laser focused on what you really want to do and how you will get it done.

So after asking yourself these big questions and establishing your goals, it’s time to quantify them and I want to go over that with you in a bit more detail.

 

The objective here is to set stretching goals. What do I mean by that?  Firstly, you need to set a goal that is not so attainable that you achieve it too easily, or so out of your depth that you can never achieve it all.  The first way doesn’t really give you those big results and makes you feel flat and like you haven’t really moved things forward. The second way makes you feel frustrated and dejected because you don’t succeed. The balance between the two is where the stretching goal lies.

 

One way to find that golden point is to use the SMART Goal methodology.  Have you heard of this?  SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based.  These are all the aspects you need to consider when setting your stretching goal.

 

For example, instead of saying, “My goal is to find a new job,” using the SMART system, you can change it to “I plan to change careers and become a digital coach by December 31st.”  Does that make sense?

 

There is so much to be said on the subject of setting goals and I am so excited to cover this topic in my workshop on September 2nd, but, what I would like you to take away today, is to remember to push yourself out of your comfort zone while staying realistic!

 

Now that your goals are realigned, and you have clarified your big vision – what do you do next? You need to take your goals and break them down into monthly actions. Next, each month, you look at what you need to accomplish this month and then see what you need to do this week to make that happen.  You then look at your day and see what tasks you need to get done today to achieve your weekly goals. In this way, your daily actions are directly tied into your big overall goals in a straight line. Make sense?

 

There are two really big benefits to using this system:

 

  • The first is that since your daily tasks are tied into your goals, they are tied into your why. You don’t ever have to have that moment of coming to your desk, sitting down to do your work and just not feeling like doing it. Do you know what I’m talking about?   When your daily tasks are tied into your big goals and your why, you will be able to tap into the motivation to get your work done with excitement and pleasure!

 

  • The second big benefit is that you will know exactly what you need to do every day because you have broken it all down by month and by week already.
